This is some research i did on the company Rowland Scaffold Co. Limited. It allows me to see what the company is and what they do in a broader picture. This will help me to concentrate on the businesses context throughout this section of the unit. I created this in Adobe Illustrator using tools and layers. I used layers to keep organisation and control of my work. However i have also used this method to create a watermark underneath my mind map. I did this by turning down the opacity percentage on this layer.
I created the arrows using the paint brush tool as i like the 'hand drawn' effect. I kept the theme of the T2 colour (orange) and Rowland Scaffolds' colour (blue). This keeps the mind map linked in with each other as well as consistency and professionalism.
This is a mind map that i applied research to on the company 'New Wave Hypnotherapy'. It allows me to see the information, about them and what they do in clearer format. However, it is a more exciting way of visualising information (information graphics). This makes the information about the company more enjoyable to read and to follow. I also created this in Adobe Illustrator using tools and layers to get the finished result. For example, I have a layer for the arrows, for the title, the watermarks and logos etc. to have complete control of each element. I kept to the theme of the T2 logo watermark with the colours (T2 orange) and (New Wave Hypnotherapy purple). This keeps consistency and flow between the colours relationship aswell as the balance between both mindmaps. The mind map looks simple and easy to follow, yet professional and consistent.
These mind maps are involved in my process for this unit. Understanding the information of the companies is vital before understanding their business contexts.

Business Contexts
There are many variations of contexts for different businesses which can
have an impact on the design process. First of all, after looking into two different
companies’, it has given me a much broader understanding and an in depth visual
of both businesses e.g. what they do as a company, who they are and how they do
it.
This is an essential step in my process of understanding both individual
contexts for both businesses and their needs.

Company No.1
-Rowland Scaffold Co. Limited
What they do as a company
Rowland Scaffold Co. Limited is an established market leading company in many fields who
offer a complete scaffolding service including a help and quality service. This
complete service is for Erection, Sales and Hire to buildings and construction,
from house renovation right through to the largest of structures. They also
support scaffolds for buildings, civil engineering, process industries and
maintenance.
The experienced team offer a full design service for more larger and
complex structures.
How they do it
All work is carried out to the CDM regulations and Rowland’s staff and
operatives are fully trained. All materials used to conform to the highest
standards and also health and safety regulations are adhered to. All of this is
regularly inspected and maintained to ensure that they are as a company and
what they deliver is a high quality and safe environment.
With over 100 years of experience as well as working with other
companies, Rowland and the management team work closely with the Northern
Counties Safety Group which helps Rowland to provide independent safety checks
on their scaffolding.
As the team offers a full design service for larger and more complex
structures, they do this by providing the clients with on site advice, detailed
calculations and working drawings.
Their Target Market
Rowland’s target market is easily identified by what they do, who it’s
for and even maybe their logo.
Customers can easily identify the company itself by looking at the logo
and the name of the company. This draws attracts the correct clients’ attention
to the business immediately.
As Rowland are Scaffold Specialists, this is therefore obvious that
their target market has to meet the needs of people wanting scaffolding. In addition, this target market includes
various fields such as;-
·
Home owners
·
Councils
·
Business Units
·
Construction Companies
In conclusion, this company represents their self well to their target
market and their needs.
How large the company is
Rowland Scaffold is a company based on the management team and the
scaffold specialists their selves. Rowland is a medium sized company in
comparison to other large companies which vary from about 30 to 60/100
employees within the building e.g. a factory company in comparison to an office
company.
However in business size, Rowland also is a medium sized business as
they only provide scaffolding around the Yorkshire area, as to larger business
that provide all over the UK.
Corporate Colour relations
The corporate colour for Rowland is a simple dark navy blue shade (C=97 M=76
Y=11 K=1). However, not only is it a traditional colour choice but it has much
more meaning between the colour and the company itself. The meaning and
relationship between the two, creates a strong impact, visual and message to
their clients as well as their selves and their image.
The dark navy blue shade has many words to describe the
meanings of this colour, such as;-
·
Secure
·
Conservative
·
Trust
·
Strength
·
Earthiness
·
Reliable
·
Intelligence
·
Seriousness
·
Patience
·
Safety
·
Stimulating in large quantity
·
Success
A few of these key words stand out to me in which describes Rowland the
best. For example, ‘Earthiness’ as they are working in a nature, earthy
environment. ‘Reliable’, ‘Trust’ and ‘Safety’, as their clients have to rely on
their skills, trust their expertise and the safety of their scaffolds.
These are just three of the few that I picked out that represents a
strong relationship between the colour and Rowland. I think Rowlands corporate
colour is the most appropriate and works well with what they do and how they do
it.
Company No.2
-New Wave Hypnotherapy
What they do as a company
New Wave Hypnotherapy provide a friendly service of hypnotherapy
solutions for many needs which is beneficial to clients. Clients are assisted
to increase their well being and to achieve and reach their desired goals.
Clients are provided with treatment plans in the hypnotherapy process to
induce a natural trance to get rid of anything unwanted, such as habits.
How they do it
As a Therapist, they use their skills and expertise as well as their
therapeutic techniques to make their clients reach their state of deep
relaxation. This makes the clients’ subconscious mind open to mental and
psychological change, which then becomes highly responsive to the therapists
suggestions and direction. The therapist then communicates with their clients’
mind to encourage positive changes. When their client is open to change, the
therapist uses their skills to provide a tailored treatment plan for lasting
change to make the hypnosis successful. The therapists’ hypnosis gets rid
of/banishes the clients’ unwanted problems by changing and finding alternative
ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.
Their Target Market
This company’s target market is obvious to the correct audience, as
their logo straight away gives out the message of what they do and who it’s
for. New Wave ‘Hypnotherapy’ this simply
stands out to customers, knowing that the company provides hypnotherapy.
New wave Hypnotherapy is obviously aimed at customers who wish to get
rid of/banish unwanted problems. For example, unwanted habits such as nail
biting. It is also aimed at people who
want to try alternative ways of thinking, feeling and behaving to get clear of
their problems, such as smoking.
In conclusion, the company’s target market is aimed at people who wish
to experience hypnosis to include natural trance and to get rid of any unwanted
problems.
How large the company is
New Wave Hypnotherapy is a new running company. It is small in company
and business size. The reason for the company being small in size is because there
is only one individual involved (self employed business). The therapist runs
the business by herself and at the moment she has just launched her new website
to advertise and market her service.
However, in terms of business size, it is small because she only provides
a friendly service to the Sheffield area. Whereas to a larger business, they
would provide their service all over the UK.
Corporate Colour relations
New Wave Hypnotherapy’s corporate colour is darkish purple shade (C= 75
M= 100 Y= 0 K= 0). The colour chosen is
not only just a shade from the colour wheel, it has a meaning and relationship
between the colour and the company itself. The colour fits in well with the
purpose of the company, e.g. what they do and what their characteristics are.
Purple is the colour of people seeking spiritual fulfilment and good
judgement. In relation to hypnotherapy, if a client was to be surrounded in the
colour purple, it would make them have a peace of mind; however it is also a
good colour to use for meditation.
Purple has various words to describe the meaning of this colour, such
as;-
- · Intuition
- · Intellectual
- · Spiritual
- · Creativity
- · Mysterious
- · Transformation
- · Power Sensitivity
- · Dignity
- · Wit
- · Varity
- · Moodiness
- · Keen Observation
- · Passion
- · Enlightenment
The meaning of this colour is quite self inflicted and I noticed a few
of the words which stood out to me in relation to the hypnotherapy company. For
example, ‘spiritual’, ‘creativity’, ‘transformation’, ‘power sensitivity,
‘moodiness’, ‘dignity’ and ‘keen observation’. This can all relate to
hypnotherapy and the relationship between the therapist and the client. The
therapist uses power sensitivity to control the power over the clients’
sensitive open mind. The therapist also making changes to the clients thoughts,
feelings and behaviour is a transformation of banishing unwanted problems. The
therapist also uses keen observation on their client to observe them whilst in
hypnosis.
This is just a few of the relations that I have picked out which is a
great colour choice to represent this service.
However in my thoughts, I think that the colour blue would also be the
perfect colour for hypnotherapy. This is because it is a calming colour which
will relax the therapists’ clients, as well as the colour evoking peaceful
feelings. The colour blue is also therapeutic to the mind and body.
Conclusion
After looking at two different companies and their business contexts, it
has helped me to understand business contexts and how they can impact on the
design process as well as the business’s needs’.
For example, in relation to the hypnotherapy company, because they are a
small company this would impact on the design process as they will have to
contact other businesses to do the work for them (who has the context they
need). For example, if new wave hypnotherapy needed a designer for their
website, this would have an impact on their design process of making the
duration longer, as they would have to outsource and take an extra step in the
process to contact another company.
In the working relationship of Rowland and T2, the design process
relates to their business needs as they need T2 to create their logo and
quotation template. Whereas T2 need clients such as Rowland for business
purposes. It is a working flow all the time, clients need T2’s context
to give them what they need in their process, whereas T2 need Rowland in
their process for business, or even T2 needing others context in their process
(to give them what they need)
There are many companies which have different needs and contexts, and
the comparison between the two which I have identified has helped me to have a
broad understanding of it.
